What should I do in the first hours?

Your opening session is a handcrafted dungeon crawl, not a roguelike reset loop. Follow the objective Escape the Shrike’s Lair and explore nodes in a sensible spine instead of clearing every dead-end first.

Nest Dweller dialogue unlocking a card during the Shrike’s Lair opening
  • Do01Finish the Inner Voice dialogue and click Judgement, The World, and Death when prompted
  • Do02In the first fight, play Grit before the enemy clock hits zero so the opening lesson sticks
  • Do03When Shrike crashes the arena, break the obstacle beside the bird — you cannot win that scripted escape
  • Do04On the overworld, talk to the robed Scholar east of the wreckage (he will not join yet)
  • Do05Take the western path, recruit Exile after the ambush, then hunt the Iron Key before the Iron Gate
  • Do06Collect Linnaeus’ Journal #1–#3 before the stone statues node
  • Do07Recruit Scholar after the statues, rest at the checkpoint, then enter Shrike’s Nest with all three heroes

Why the scripted Shrike escape matters

The first bird appearance teaches that not every fight is a DPS check. Targeting the obstacle is the win condition. When you return later with a full party, the real Shrike fight uses the same clock reading — covered on the Shrike page.

Overworld nodes are one-way lessons

Paths branch at the Fork, but key items sit on short detours: Nest Dweller for the Iron Key, journals for statues, and the dog fight that opens the chest with Memories. Grab those before you push the Iron Gate.

Next up: how each hero actually joins, so you stop wondering why Scholar ignored you at the wreckage.

How do I unlock Warrior, Exile, and Scholar?

Early dungeon text uses role names — Warrior, Exile, and Scholar — on a single shared deck. Later dialogue commonly names them Lev, Ayla, and Thade; when a build guide is unclear, stick to role labels.

HeroWhen they joinEarly job
WarriorOpening characterFrontline damage, Rage, shield tanks
ExileWestern corridor ambushQuiver arrows, Weakness, glass-cannon DPS
ScholarAfter stone statues path fightRot / mana support, party heals

Do not force Scholar early

Talking to the robed figure near the eastern wreckage is flavour and foreshadowing. Scholar only joins after you clear the statue phrase and continue the pathway fight. Pushing east before the Iron Key just shows a blocked gate.

Nest Dweller Memory trade

Win the staring contest with three Redraws for Staring Champ, or attack for Cheater. Open the iron chest for Memory of a Monk and Memory of a Player, then trade one Memory to the Nest Dweller for the Iron Key. Keeping Monk is the safer long-term pick in most routes — confirm what you still need before you hand either away.

With the party spine clear, the next beginner killer is softlocks, not HP.

Which early softlocks stop a Shards of Order beginner?

Search volume for statue, sphinx, herbalist, and refill-bell queries exists because the game hides progress behind phrases and one-shot choices. Bookmark these before a long session.

Statue phrase you need now

Collect all three Linnaeus journals, then enter Sinners Feasting Upon The Guilty at the statues for Memory of an Illusionist. Searching “legion chant”? Use legion chant — same gate, chant-titled page.

Village fork: herbalist vs miller

In Purged Village you can only save one of the two. Herbalist rewards Sage (party heal); Miller rewards Tasty Rations. Pick for your deck, then still use the herbalist house workstation later for ointment recipes.

Once softlocks are on your radar, tighten the shared deck so draws stop feeling random.

How should I treat the shared deck early?

There is no per-hero deck limit the way classic deckbuilders isolate piles. Every unlock lands in one pool, so dead cards dilute Grit, Weakness, and Rot when you need them.

  • Do01Remove cards that do not match your opening plan — smaller decks cycle faster
  • Do02Keep at least one reliable shield / Grit line for Warrior
  • Do03Leave room for Exile Weakness and Scholar Rot even if Warrior feels stronger
  • Do04Gear injects cards — evaluate new weapons before you auto-add everything
  • Do05Redraw starts expensive (about 4 Time) and drops as you spend Time on cards

Balance before specialty

Stacking only Warrior stars starves Exile and Scholar draw odds. Clear Shrike’s Lair with a balanced hand, then specialise once you understand clocks — details live on best cards and characters.

Ethereal Power is a once-per-fight button

Fallen heroes turn their cards into 1-Time Revive cards and push Fracture risk on later Redraws. Ethereal Power revives to full, heals the party, and grants an Ethereal card — but only once per battle. Save it for two-down emergencies, especially if you care about ending branches that punish spam.

With deck hygiene set, follow a clean region order instead of wandering.

What route should I follow after Shrike’s Lair?

Region order is fixed enough that a hub-style spine works: Shrike’s Lair → Purged Village → Continent / Cathedral of Order → Breathless Sands → Frozen Marina → finale hubs.

Law of Identity unlocks the village exit

You need the Law of Identity to open the eastern Village Gate after Morgain. Treat Law restores as story systems with costs — not free power-ups. Read laws before you restore every shard on sight.

Use Discord when a node text is ambiguous

Official invite lives on the Discord page. Channel names stay TBA until confirmed; still join for patch notes and softlock screenshots.

FAQ

Is Shards of Order a roguelike?

No. It is a handcrafted deckbuilding RPG route without classic roguelite permadeath loops. Checkpoints heal and save progress inside regions.

Should I learn combat or puzzles first?

Skim this beginner page, then the combat guide for clocks. Pull puzzle pages only when a node blocks you so you do not spoil later regions early.

What is the first real boss?

Shrike, the Judging Bird — about 140 HP on the full-party rematch, with a Spectral Nail add. Full tells and swaps: Shrike guide.
