Can I skip the statues?
Not if you want the intended Scholar unlock timing and Illusionist Memory. Softlocking here is common precisely because the phrase is required.

This Shards of Order stone statues page gives the exact Linnaeus phrase that clears the Shrike’s Lair softlock. Collect the three journals first, enter the fixed line, claim the Memory, then continue to Scholar and Shrike. Verified August 16, 2026 · Steam.

The statues sit on the Shrike’s Lair spine after the Iron Gate and the Legionnaire fight that yields the Shard of the Past Bow for Exile.

The eastern exit stays blocked until after the real Shrike kill. Statues are on the western/key route progression, not the blocked gate.
Use the Iron Gate checkpoint before the statues if you are unsure about journal count. Dying later with a wrong Memory trade hurts more than a short backtrack.
Journal checklist next.
All three pages contribute fragments of the phrase. Missing one page is the most common reason players think the puzzle is “bugged.”
| Journal | When to grab | Failure mode if skipped |
|---|---|---|
| Linnaeus’ Journal #1 | Marked lair nodes before statues | Incomplete phrase options |
| Linnaeus’ Journal #2 | Same pre-statue sweep | Incomplete phrase options |
| Linnaeus’ Journal #3 | Node after Legionnaire / before statues | Cannot assemble full line |
If the statues UI already opened, cancel out and roam adjacent nodes for sparkle pickups. The game expects the journal trio as the intended hinting method.
Memory of a Monk / Player come from the iron chest for the Nest Dweller trade. Journals are separate lore pickups for this puzzle only.
Enter the phrase exactly once you have all three.
Choose the three correct fragments so the statues accept:
| Piece | Text |
|---|---|
| Full line | Sinners Feasting Upon The Guilty |
| Common typo | Sinner / Feast / Guilts — all fail |
| Source | Linnaeus’ Journal #1–#3 combined |
The journals describe the illusionist’s crime in that cadence. Matching the in-game capitalisation and word order avoids false negatives when the UI offers near-miss options.
Pick the fragments that reconstruct the full line above rather than inventing a new sentence from memory.

Success grants Memory of an Illusionist. Continue to the pathway past the statues to trigger Scholar’s recruitment conversation and fight.
| After statues | Result |
|---|---|
| Memory of an Illusionist | Quest / build Memory item |
| Pathway monsters + Scholar | Third hero joins the shared deck |
| Vengeance Sword (fight reward) | Warrior weapon upgrade path |
| Checkpoint | Heal/save before Shrike’s Nest |
The Memory matters, but the party finally hitting three heroes is what makes the Shrike rematch fair. Do not skip the pathway fight.
Iron Key → journals → statues → Scholar → Shrike. Full node order lives on the walkthrough; first-hours framing on the beginner guide.
Troubleshooting if it still fails:
Work this checklist before restarting the region.
Breathless Sands has a different three-answer riddle. Do not reuse statue text there — see sphinx answers.
Same word-order gate — open legion chant when that is the query you typed.
Compare your node path against the walkthrough Shrike’s Lair spine, then ask with a screenshot on the Discord.
