Can I finish the village without Law of Identity?
No. The Village Gate requires it after Morgain.

This Shards of Order laws page explains shattered Law shards — story keys that also rewrite combat and world rules. The early critical unlock is Law of Identity for the Purged Village exit; later shards include Intent, Hunger, Light, and Time pieces. Verified August 16, 2026 · Steam.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Theme | Shattered Laws undo the world — restore at a cost |
| Early key | Law of Identity |
| Village gate | Requires Identity to leave Purged Village |
| Later pieces | Intent · Hunger · Light · Time |
| Hunger guardian | The Wine King (Sphinx answer) |
| Related boss | Shrike |
Laws are both quest keys and systemic modifiers. The store pitch is literal: restore shattered Laws and face consequences — combat timers, hunger rules, light/vision, and identity gates all lean on this fiction.

Some doors and region transitions hard-require a Law item. If a gate tooltip names Identity, you are not under-levelled — you are missing the shard.
Several Steam achievements are named after Laws. Tracking restores helps both story and achievements.
Identity path:
Follow the Purged Village spine until Morgain, Guardian of the Order, falls in Morgain’s Tomb.
Fast path: Wereshrike’s Brain on Margrave’s body. Cleaner Hermit path: spare Wereshrike with Disenchantment, then take Margrave’s Brain from the Black Wing Commander. Detail lives on the walkthrough.
Cathedral of Order / continent travel toward Breathless Sands begins. Keep Identity in mind as the template for later “Law as key” moments.
Public route notes call out these pieces. Treat names as campaign milestones, not a completion checklist until you hold the item.
| Law | Where it matters | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Purged Village exit | Mandatory early gate key |
| Intent | Mid/late restores | Watch consequence text |
| Hunger / Satiety | Breathless Sands · Wine King | Sphinx names the guardian |
| Light | Late route / achievements | Named Steam achievement exists |
| Time | Pieces across late hubs | Wine King also twists Time Costs |
Guardian of Law of Hunger and Satiety → The Wine King. Answers page: sphinx answers.
Highlighted achievements include Law of Identity, Law of Hunger, and Law of Light — useful confirmation that those restores are campaign milestones.
When to restore:
Restore when a gate or quest explicitly requires it. Delay optional restores if you are chasing a restrictive ending flag or the consequence text looks brutal mid-build.
| Situation | Restore now? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Village Gate locked | Yes — Identity | Hard progress gate |
| Quest journal demands the Law | Yes | Story continuity |
| Optional shrine with scary text | Maybe wait | Ending / combat cost |
| You are mid-boss and curious | No | Do not experiment mid-fight |
| Achievement hunting | Plan order | See achievements page |

Exact modifiers vary by shard, but the design pattern is consistent: the world becomes more “ordered” and your fights gain new constraints or tells.
Wine King already demonstrates Time Cost distortion tied to Hunger/Time themes — Rot and Barrage remain strong answers. Future Light/Time pieces can change vision or clock behaviour; read the restore summary before confirming.
Ethereal Power frequency and Law restores both appear in true-ending style discussions. If you care, keep a manual note of what you restored and when, and ask on Discord for current patch consensus.
Pair with region routing on the walkthrough.
Think of Laws as chapter keys bolted onto the walkthrough hubs.
| Region hub | Law touchpoint | Player action |
|---|---|---|
| Shrike’s Lair | Setup only | No Identity yet — learn clocks |
| Purged Village | Law of Identity | Mandatory gate key after Morgain |
| Continent / Cathedral | Transition | Carry Identity forward |
| Breathless Sands | Hunger / Time themes | Sphinx lore + Wine King pressure |
| Frozen Marina / finale | Light / Time pieces | Read restore text before confirming |
If an objective literally says reclaim a Law, stop side-looting and push that boss or shrine. Optional Memories can wait; hard gates cannot.
After every restore: trim cards that fight the new rule, re-check Ethereal policy, and note the Steam unlock if a Law-named achievement pops.
No. The Village Gate requires it after Morgain.
Not exactly — they are story systems with mechanical teeth. Some are mandatory keys; some are optional restores with costs.

Related, not identical. The Wine King is the Hunger guardian fight; the achievement / shard restore may fire on the Law step itself — check Steam overlay text.
